Baking a pretty cake is not complicated. You can keep it simple and smart if you follow these simple guidelines:

It is up to you to decide whether you want to bake a pretty cake from scratch or from a pre-mix packet. Both ways, the process can be simple, if you carefully read through the ingredients that are required and get them ready, before you start. Remember, cakes usually fail when one or more key ingredients are missing.
While the usual ingredients that you would need include eggs, water, milk, butter/margarine/oil and flour, ensure that all the ingredients are at room temperature.
Take the right size of baking pan (this is very important) and coat the inside with butter or shortening with paper towel. Ensure that this coating is thick enough as this can prevent the baked cake from sticking to the pan. Half a tablespoon of butter is considered to be right for doing this. Then sprinkle a tablespoon of flour to lightly coat the buttered-inside. In case you want to serve the cake straight from the pan, then there is no need to do the flouring.
Preheat the oven as per directions.
The mixing of the ingredients is as important as any other step, when you want to bake a pretty cake. Measure the ingredients as accurately as possible and mix them in the order and speed specified. Remember, to bake a pretty cake, you cannot afford to rush.
While mixing the ingredients, use a rubber spatula to scrape off the sides of the mixing bowl.
The cake batter is ready when all the ingredients are well-blended. Pour it in a baking dish evenly covering only 2/3rd of the pan. Remember, when you bake a pretty cake, the cake is expected to rise under heat.
For releasing any air-bubble which might be stuck within the batter, gently tap the pan on the kitchen counter 3 times.
Place the baking pan in the center of the oven rack. If there is more than one pan, these should not touch each other or the wall of the oven.

Close the oven door and set the timer according to the recipe that you are following minus 8 minutes.

As soon as the timer goes off, check the readiness of the cake buy inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. When you bake a pretty cake and the cake is done, the toothpick will come out clean without any cake sticking to it. Put it back to the oven for another 4 or 5 minutes with the oven turned off.
Take the cake out, leave in pan for 10 minutes then turn out on a rack to cool.
Decorate with the frosting of your choice.
